What does the name Karuṇā mean?

The Buddhist word Karuṇā describes the virtue of mercy, love and (active) compassion. This attitude of mind is one of the four basic virtues (brahmavihara), along with metta (loving kindness), mudita (compassion) and ubkkhā (equanimity), which should develop a student of life (bodhisattva) on his path to help others to enlighten.

Prerequisite for the development of Karuṇā is the experience of being one with the universe.

The consequence of this experience of non-separateness is an attitude of compassion in which all polar ideas and the associated resistances and aversions dissolve: all beings and all appearances of this world are met with the same all-embracing love and helpfulness. The virtue of this mental attitude is embodied in Mahayana Buddhism by the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara.

It differs from the word "compassion" in that "compassion", in addition to perceiving suffering, also includes the desire and the act of alleviating the suffering.

A satisfied life is better than a successful life. Because our success is measured by others, but satisfaction is measured by our own soul, mind and heart.
